A teenager caught in a rip current while swimming in Gulf Shores may be the first death attributed to Tropical Storm Lee.
Two teenagers were swimming near the Beach Club off Fort Morgan Road when they got caught in a rip current and were swept away in rough waters churned up by the tropical storm, according to Major Anthony Lowery of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office.
Their mother attempted to rescue the teenagers, but she was only able to bring one of her children safely to shore.
Two others, including the teenagers' father, also jumped in to help, according to a U.S. Coast Guard official.
The distress call came into 911 before 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The Coast Guard called off the search by 7:45, Lowery says.
