The annual Governor's Hurricane Conference is underway in Fort Lauderdale. Scott, the director of the National Hurricane Center and Florida's new emergency management chief are scheduled to speak at the conference's general session Wednesday afternoon.
The six-month Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration will release its forecast for the 2011 storm season on Thursday.
Weather forecasters at Colorado State University are predicting an above-average hurricane season with 16 named storms. They expect nine of those storms to strengthen into hurricanes, five of them major.
Last year's hurricane season was one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, including 12 hurricanes.
