Officials in Houston and Galveston worried Saturday (9/13) that a number of water rescues would be needed in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.
The Category 2 storm came ashore in Galveston early Saturday morning with winds topping 100-miles-an-hour. Ike also carried a storm surge that flooded coastal and low-lying areas and prompted concerns about people who may have ignored orders to evacuate.
Ike weakened to a Category 1 storm after landfall, but it still packed high winds and driving rain. The Houston area sustained substantial damage to trees and roofs.
