University of South Alabama Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann announced Wednesday that the school has signed a contract to face Louisiana State during the 2016 football season.
The contest is scheduled to take place at Tiger Stadium on Oct. 15 that year. It gives the Jaguars - who will complete a two-year transition to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly NCAA I-A) level and become eligible for the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2013 - three non-conference games on the slate that season.
LSU is the third Southeastern Conference school that the Jags are scheduled to face in the future. USA has a three-game contract with Mississippi State that begins in 2012 and includes a matchup in Mobile in ’14, and will also visit Tennessee during the 2013 campaign.
“We are continually trying to find schools like LSU to get on our schedule,” said USA head coach Joey Jones. “They are a top-10 program virtually every year, I’m honored to go play them. I know that our kids look forward to playing games like this too.
“Personally, having played in Tiger Stadium a couple of times, I remember what a great experience it was. They didn’t always welcome us, but those fans are as good as it gets in the country when it comes to backing their team.”
Other current FBS members on future Jaguar non-conference schedules include North Carolina State, Navy and Kent State.
