The University of South Alabama has unveiled a new logo for all its athletic programs and marching band – an aggressive and stylized Jaguar profile incorporating USA’s signature American flag colors of red, white and blue.

The new logo was stimulated by the creation of the new football and marching band programs at USA. The two programs were advocated last year by students, culminating in a student petition drive across campus. In December 2007, the USA Board of Trustees voted unanimously to start an NCAA-sanctioned football team and marching band program on campus. The football team will play its first games in fall 2009.

Last spring, USA President Gordon Moulton assembled a logo committee representing faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends and the athletic department to review USA’s sports and marching band branding.

“With the coming of our football and marching band programs next fall, many members of our University community felt that it was a good time to review our sports-related logos,” Moulton said.

“I believe our logo committee, with the help of talented University of South Alabama artists, has created a new look that captures the excitement and enthusiasm of our students and alumni, as well as the growing strength of our athletic and marching band programs. The new logo produces a shiver of pride among Jaguar supporters on campus and around the world.”

As part of the 14-person committee led by USA’s Office of Public Relations, four professional artists affiliated with USA designed the logo. They are: Matt Johnson, a USA alumnus and graphic arts instructor in the department of art in the College of Arts and Sciences; Dianne Marshall, director of USA publication services; Scott Donaldson, a graphic artist in publication services; and, Elise Jones, a graphic artist and wife of USA Football Coach Joey Jones.

The new design will be the official wordmark/logo for all USA athletics and marching band activities. It will replace the previous Jaguar heads and stalking Jaguars. Baseball and softball will continue to be allowed to use, as a part of their uniforms, the historic interlocking “SA.” The University’s academic logo, the interlocking “USA” in a box, will not change.
