Crowded Beaches, Restaurants for last Summer Weekend

After a summer many beach businesses would love to forget, the traditional end of the summer season, Labor Day, brought a little hope to Alabama's Gulf Coast.

Everything that was missing this summer, is back. Crowded restaurants, heavy traffic and tourists on Baldwin County beaches for the last weekend of summer.
This is what the beaches are suppose to look like on a hot sunny day. For Charlie Aurand it was his first trip to the beach this season. "Nobody knew it was this pristine. It's a shame because it really ruined the season."
From the beaches, to the restaurants that were so busy there was a waiting list for a table.
"We're doing great numbers," says The Hangout owner Shaul Zislin, "and lots of really happy people which is the most important thing because they are going to go home and let people know that wow we missed out this summer lets make sure we don't miss out next summer."
Traffic was the heaviest it's been all season. Even the mayor of Gulf Shores had to wait his turn. "Wasn't it great!" Robert Craft says this is just what his town needed. "I feel a lot better. I was hoping for something good to happen. Not financially good but emotionally good. Folks down here have been through a lot and they deserved a good weekend and this looks like its going to fill that bill."
But it's the tourist who will have the final word when they return home with the tans and their memories. What will they tell their friends? "I saw drills out here and people sifting and that's reassuring to me that people are actually testing it but the beaches are safe and we need to bring business back to this area or there's not going to be this area anymore."
And one more thing, occupancy rates are almost at 100 percent on Pleasure Island. More good news for an area that will take all the good news it can get.
