Volunteers were busy cleaning up before a check presentation by the National Wildlife Foundation and its Alabama Chapter. They donated a total of $60,000 today to the kickoff of “100-1000 Restoring Coastal Alabama.”
“In the next five years to build 100 miles of oyster reef and to plant and support the growth of 1000 acres of marsh and sea grass behind those oyster reefs,” says Bethany Kraft with the Alabama Coastal Foundation. Organizers say this ambitious project will help the ecosystem recover from the oil disaster.
“We've got still huge areas of dead zones in the waterway, low oxygen and fish and other critters need a place to come where everything's good the oyster reef provides that habitat,” says Casi Callaway with Mobile Bay Keeper. They’re looking for donations and project ideas.
