The plea from the beginning of this disaster from locals along the beach was to identify the rules of claims process and then get the money to us as fast as possible. Ken Feinberg says, he can do that.
More than 500 people crowded into the Orange Beach gymnasium to hear the man that holds the 20 billion dollar purse strings. Many came to ask for help.
"Will there be large claims centers locally?" One of the questions from the audience. The answer from Feinberg, "Right here in your on locality. You file a claim small, medium, large and we'll be able next month to process that claim."
Others in the audience were in tears. "They have actually paid me 5 thousand dollars as an advance loss of income and I can't get the rest." The answer, "I will find an answer to this problem of brokers and agents."
"I believe this man." Susan Boggs filed a claim in May for the family charter fishing business. "The claims process is what we are going to depend on for our livelihood."
Feinberg says claims will be based on direct and indirect impact. Direct claims he says are easy, fishermen, a motel on the beach. Indirect claims are not as cut and dry like the pecan store owner whose business is down.
"I can't answer which claims falls on which side of that line but I can tell you that those eligibility criteria will be applied consistently and fairly to make those distinctions"
Overall everyone seemed pleased with what they heard and believe Feinberg is a man of his word. We'll find out next month when he takes over the claims process.
