Oil Slick Threatens Orange Beach

Oil Slick Threatens Orange Beach

Crews scrambled to soak up an oil slick about a quarter-mile off the coast of Orange Beach.

Flying over Orange Beach in the News Five Wind Creek Chopper, a cluster of boats a quarter-mile from the shore catches our eye.

Around the boats we see rainbow sheen and patches of dispersed oil.

Four vessels of opportunity were working in the immediate area, using absorbent pom-poms to soak up the oil. Two workers tried to mop it up using a pom-pom on the end of a stick and a net with absorbent cloth inside.

The workers, who wore gloves and a hazmat suit, were no match for the slick.

The pilot of a nearby helicopter, which was contracted by BP, told us over the radio that more resources were on the way.
