BP has hired hundreds of workers to keep oil off Alabama's coast and remove any that does.
Tons of solid oil waste are removed each day in Mobile County alone.
Any tar balls or contaminated boom collected are taken to the Chastang Landfill in Mount Vernon.
It's operated by Waste Management.
The company has set-up several staging sites in Mobile county where solid oil waste can be dumped.
On average about 20 tons of the stuff are brought to the landfill every day and mixed in with regular garbage.
"Each load that comes in from the BP project gets dumped in the same location that all rest of the trash that comes in each day. So that specific load is managed just like the normal trash that comes in each day. Residential garbage, commercial trash -- all of it gets co-mingled into the same what we call our daily workface," said Waste Management Environmental Manager Mark Noel.
Waste Management says what they're doing is safe for the environment because the solid oil waste is considered non hazardous and is not a threat to anyone.
