Debris from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion has washed up on Dauphin Island, west of the Katrina Cut.
A pair of brothers volunteering in the oil disaster disovered pieces of the rig while surveying the isolated beach, which locals call 'Katrina Key'.
Joe and Leo Denton say they initially thought the debris was coral contaminated with oil, so the brothers collected a sample and delivered it to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
The Sea Lab confirmed through Transocean and the U.S. Coast Guard that the debris is most likely pieces of foam from the riser pipe of the exploded rig.
The Joint Information Center for the oil disaster urges anyone who discovers pieces of the rig to report the finding to Transocean at 202-309-9559.
