The NAACP sent a letter to BP on Friday expressing concerns that minorities helping to clean up the oil spill on the Gulf Coast tend to be assigned tougher and lower paying jobs.
NAACP President Ben Jealous said he wants to meet with BP's CEO. The organization said minority contractors are not receiving equal consideration for opportunities to participate in mitigation efforts. It claims contractors are bringing in workers from out of state instead of hiring locals who are struggling due to the BP spill. The letter also stated that cleanup workers are not being provided with protective clothing and masks.
Associated Press said e-mail messages left with several BP spokespeople were not immediately returned.
