Some Tourists Still Visit Gulf Despite Oil Slick Fears

Despite a drop in tourism this 4th of July, Gulf Shores isn’t deserted.

The waves are still crashing in Gulf Shores--but apart from some double red flags there really isn't anything new to worry about. As I showed you yesterday a drop in tourism this 4th means there are some empty spaces at some restaurants--which isn't all bad.

“We went to Lulu's, we love Lulu's restaurant and normally the wait is an hour two hours long we got in less than 30 minutes, not as many people and we were just here last summer, says Cheryl Bonneau. Cheryl and her family are vacationing from Montgomery. She says it's sad to see a beach that looks good and less people out enjoying it.

“I think it's sad for tourism, I think it's sad for the gulf, for the business owners and for the people who live here in this area,” says Bonneau. Some local restaurants have been reporting a 50% drop in business, due in large part to fear about the oil slick. Joshua Todd is visiting the pier with his family. He says he'd like to see more people down here this weekend, but at least getting back to Daphne won't be a headache.

“At first we thought we'd have to deal with a lot of traffic coming back but it doesn't seem like that will be a problem,” says Todd.
