A Mardi Gras tradition continues at the Church Street Cemetery downtown. Joe Cain’s Merry Widows cried their way to Joe Cain’s grave this morning. The annual event commemorates the life of Joe Cain—the man credited with bringing Mardi Gras back to Mobile after the Civil War. The widows were dressed in all black and each claimed to be Joe’s favorite. Good weather made for a huge crowd downtown.
“It's a religion, I have to raise Cain, that's what it's all about he brought it back to us so why not bring him back,” says Cyndey Ramsay. The Robertsdale woman says she’s been going to the cemetery for this event her entire life. The partying continued downtown at Joe Cain’s house. 19 women played the parts of Joe’s widows this year.
