Some Hurlburt History

Hurlburt Field has a rich tradition as one of the most important bases in the United States Air Force. At the air park near the base entrance you can see its long history. The park features several aircraft used throughout the decades. The field was started in 1943 and named after a World War II pilot who died in a flight accident. The base historian says Hurlburt Field began its transformation into the base we know today in the 1960's. That's when the military put its focus on counter-insurgency programs.

“Army was very heavily involved and then the air force became part of that to provide the transportation to move the troops,” says Command Historian Herbert A. Mason Jr. Mason says the special operations school started with just one class in 1967. Today there are dozens. We’ll have much more on Hurlburt Field tonight during our Hometown Tour at 6 pm.
