Odds are, the toughest forecasters won't be found on TV, no offense Alan. They're in northwest Florida. Hurlburt Field is also home to the 10th Combat Weather Squadron. These special ops weathermen are forecasters who also have special operations training. They're teamed with other members of special ops for environmental recon. This info is especially valuable in the heat of battle.
“In the middle of a fight when you rely on overhead close air support having knowledge of what those air support are flying into is important,” Says 10th Combat Weather Squadron Commander Lt. Colonel Joseph Benson. He says squadron members study the weather, terrain, water and other environmental factors to see how that could affect combat operations. Generally a half dozen go out during any given deployment. You can learn more about Hurlburt Field during tonight’s Hometown Tour at 6 pm.
