Oak Tree Social Club

Oak Tree Social Club

The loneliest people in any community are probably the senior citizens. From jobs that provided plenty of social interaction, they retired to a much quieter life. Often it's up to them to find time-well-spent with friends. And that's exactly what happened years ago in a Mobile nighborhood.

A live oak tree near a small strip of businesses on South Broad Street, clearly survived Frederic in September 1979...the date's important because that's about the time the Oak Tree Social Club was formed. And they meet under the tree.
The order of the business is the same every day...dominoes. But there's more than just the game.
John Hendricks, retired roofer, sums it up, "Everybody up under this tree...it's just like a family."
No score is kept. Sylvester Brown, retired from Mobile Public Works, answers to the title "President." He says they play every day except Sundays and rainy days. Brown adds that is only one event besides the Domino games. "Every year all the members go to dinner."
There are about twenty-five members, but only one table, one game, and no money changes hands, unless...
"Not unless one gets sick. We take up a donation, like if someone has been in the hospital or home sick, we give him a little change."
There is one lady member, Cynthia Watts. "When I come down here and play dominoes, I gets them," she laughs, "but they let me win sometime."
Maybe. But, of course, winning is only part of the fun here.
