The room was reserved, the podium ready but the guest of honor was a no show. "Oh we were so excited thinking we were going to see Sen. Santorum," says Robin Rowan from Foley. Rick Santorum canceled his appearance in Pensacola because of the threat of severe weather. "He is not showing up today. I am so disappointed," says supporter Joan Cumblidge. For undecided voters like Senga Heinzerling who is still trying to make up her mind, it's a missed opportunity. "You see 'em on TV but to me they are playing politics. I wanted to see him in person cause you can read people better in person." Rowan has met him in person and says he is the right candidate. "If people really knew him or really knew who he was we wouldn't be in the position we are in now. He would be tied or ahead of Newt Gingrich." Polls show Santorum a distant third in the Florida primary but republican officials in Escambia County say don't count him out just yet especially in the conservative panhandle. "It's basically neck in neck between Romney and Gingrich but Santorum has a huge ground swell of support in Florida," according to Chairman of the Republican Party in Escambia County. The right candidate, she says, could take it all. "This can be victory row for someone. That conservative candidate that is running here and we can really bring it home and counter-balance what happens in south Florida." Weather may have spoiled the party in Pensacola. "I think he's got my vote whether he's here or not," says Cumblidge. The race is still on.
