A cannon blast sounded the start of the inaugural "Race to the Top of the Tower" in Orange Beach Thursday morning. Almost 30 first responders from Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley raced up the stairs of the 33 floor east Turquoise Place Tower. That's almost 600 steps. Officer Carlos Lizarraga with the Foley Police Department won the race making it to the top in four minutes, 13 seconds. "I just give it up to all these guys for coming out and supporting, ah for this program," he told News Five. "I think this is a great event and look forward to racing next year." Lizarraga was named Officer of the Year in Foley on Wednesday. Proceeds from the race go to benefit the Special Olympics of Alabama.
