Mobile and Baldwin County schools will be closed.
The annual MLK Day march in Mobile will begin with participants lining up at the Lyons Street parking lot on Bishop State's main campus at 10 a.m. The march is at noon. The route will continue up MLK Avenue to Lafayette Street to Spring Hill Avenue, ending at Lyons Park.
A march will be held Monday 10:30 a.m. in Bay Minette, beginning at Kids Parks, 303 McMillian Ave., and ending at the John F. Rhodes Civic Center, 301 D’ Olive St.
A program will follow the march. In case of rain, the program will be held at 11 a.m. at the Civic Center. The keynote speaker will be Joe L. Reed, retiring associate executive secretary of Alabama Education Association, who is also chairman of the Alabama Democratic Conference.
To honor Dr. King’s legacy, the Alabama Coastal Foundation (ACF) is hosting a “MLK Day of Service: Clean Up our Downtown Waterfront” event at Cooper Riverside Park on Monday, January 16 from 1:30pm-4:00pm. In the words of Dr. King, “everybody can be great because everybody can serve,” and ACF invites you to connect to your coast by serving on January 16.
The University of South Alabama will participate in the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. International Day of Service held Mon, Jan. 16 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Dumas Wesley Community Center at 126 Mobile Street. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The JagTran buses will pick up students at Beta/Gamma Commons at 9 a.m. T-shirts will be given to the first 400 volunteers, and a complimentary lunch will be provided by Firehouse Subs and Chick Fil A.
The Mobile BayBears, Baseball America's Minor League Team of the Year, will grant free admission to the Hank Aaron Childhood Home & Museum on Monday, January 16th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.
