Not everyone has the world on a string but Erik Bendl does.
"Over the past four and a half years my dog and I have walked in thirty, now thirty-one states." Alabama is his latest. "Doing it because I lost my Mom to diabetes. She was a state representative in Kentucky and passed away at the age of 54."
So to raise awareness he and his dog "Nice" and a giant ball painted like a globe, walk. "It's sort of a rolling metaphor. Diabetes is a worldwide problem. I'm trying to be the example that you can keep fit, playing ball, walking your dog."
Reaction ranges from honks by passing motorist to strange looks by fellow walkers. "I usually put a smile on peoples faces that's good for your health too," he says.
Bendl says he walks about 8 to 15 miles a day. He collects money for the diabetes association while he walks but it's not about the money, it's about inspiration.
"Love yourself. Go for a walk. Walk with the one's you care for, prevent and turn diabetes around if you have it."
That's what he does and has done for almost four thousand miles. Raising awareness about diabetes and remembering his mother with every step.
Once through Alabama, Bendl will head across Mississippi and then on to New Orleans.
