New AEA Head Doesn't Foresee State Cuts to Schools

The new leader of the Alabama Education Association says he doesn't expect the state's public schools to be hit by cuts in state money again this year.

Mabry says that despite healthy sales tax and income tax receipts, the Education Trust Fund could still be in danger of losing money to the state's General Fund.

Just last month, for example, Gov. Robert Bentley said he was weighing moving money from the Trust Fund to the General Fund to stave off a shortage of at least $400 million.

Mabry, a former state finance director, took the reins from longtime AEA chief Paul Hubbert on Jan. 1.

But Henry Mabry tells The Huntsville Times that he doesn't think the schools are out of danger just yet.
