Students interested in applying for the Mobile County Public Magnet School Program for the 2012-13 school year are urged to make application starting January 3, 2012 at http://www.mcpss.com
SEE AND SIGN DAYS are also being sponsored at each of the magnet schools on Friday, January 20th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday, January 21th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Parents will be given the opportunity to see what is offered at Mobile County Public School System’s magnet schools and complete an application for the school of their choice for the 2011-12 School Year. Volunteers, faculty, and counselors will be available to answer questions about the various magnet school programs.
Magnet schools are open to qualifying Mobile County Public School System resident students and offer unique, accelerated, academic programs. Students interested in mathematics, science, and technology in grades K-5 may be interested in visiting Chickasaw School of Mathematics, Science and Technology located at 50 12th Avenue, Chickasaw, AL. Students in grades 6-8 will find a challenging, fun, and innovative program at Clark-Shaw Magnet School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. Clark-Shaw is a 2007 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. It is located at 5960 Arlberg St., Mobile, AL.
Students entering kindergarten – Grade 5, who are interested in a challenging academic curriculum in addition to an engaging arts program should visit Old Shell Road School of Creative and Performing Arts located at 1706 Old Shell Road, but moving in June 2012 to 3160 Heather Street (Former Spencer Elementary Building). In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, students receive daily instruction in dance, movement, drama, music, and art. Students in Grade 6 – 8, who are interested in advanced study in the arts must visit Dunbar School of Creative and Performing Arts located at 500 Saint Anthony Street. At Dunbar, students can continue their arts education and develop their performance skills in a strong academic environment.
Kindergarten – grade 5 students interested in traditional academics, in a quality learning environment, and communication skills may be interested in Council Traditional School located at 751 Wilkinson Street, which is an International Baccalaureate School. Phillips Preparatory School located at 3255 Old Shell Road is also a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and emphasizes a rigorous college preparatory curriculum for students in grades 6-8.
For students wishing to prepare for pre-law or pre-medical study, LeFlore Magnet High School offers students in grades 9-12 an excellent choice of study. LeFlore Magnet High School is located at 700 Donald Street.
Only students residing in the Mobile County Public School System are eligible to enroll in the Magnet Schools Program.
