Highway 225 is one of Baldwin County's most beautiful roads.
Local leaders want to capitalize on the highway's breath-taking vistas, overlooks, rolling hills and waterfront backdrops by designating 225 as a national, scenic byway.
The Baldwin County Dept. of Archives and History is applying for both state and national scenic byway status with the Federal Highway Administration.
To qualify, highways need to scenic and rich in local culture and history. Local leaders say 225 meets those standards with attractions like Blakeley State Park, Saluda Hill Cemetery and Bicentennial Park.
Designating 225 as a national scenic byway could bring in millions of additional tourism dollars.
The Federal Highway Administration is reviewing the application.
