A retired Wisconsin firefighter was hit by a car while riding his "recumbent" tricycle on County Road 4 about a mile east of Highway 59 Tuesday night.

The driver left the scene.

Michael Hoeft is in critical condition- he suffered massive head trauma and internal injuries.

Hoeft and his wife recently moved to Gulf Shores.

Investigators don't have a lot of leads in the case. They aren't sure if it was a car or a truck that hit Hoeft. Nobody saw the hit and run.

If Hoeft doesn't survive, the driver could be charged with manslaughter or murder.

Call the Gulf Shores Police Department at 251-968-2431 if you have any information.
