Valerie Green insists her faith has kept her strong as she lives the nightmare of every law enforcement family.
"I'm not going to question God as to why him," Valerie said during an interview with News Five. "God has my husband standing at the gate, guarding the gate for him."
She hasn't watched the news much over the past eleven days. She says she didn't need to--- she was living it.
On February 3, while driving in her car, Valerie received a phone call. She won't say who called her, but they told her that her husband, Officer Steven Green, had been in an accident. "I told them to meet me at my mom's house because I had the baby, and we left and we went to the hospital from there," she remembers.
Valerie quickly learned there was no accident. Instead, her husband was murdered--- stabbed in the neck by a prisoner he was transporting to Mobile Metro Jail.
In the hours that followed, Mobile police were in a stand-off with her husband's killer, while she was trying to figure out how to tell their three children what happened.
"My husband was a family person. He loved his kids more than anything," says Valerie. "I knew that was going to be my hardest position to tell them."
How she told them isn't something she is willing to talk about, but Valerie will say the love and support this community has shown her family since then is simply amazing.
The funeral procession is just one example. "It was beautiful," she says. "Words can't even express what it was."
