He has no fear of making decisions with the eyes of thousands of cheering fans on him. Alabama Quarterback AJ McCarron says he doesn't get nervous, but what he revealed to WKRG News 5 might surprise you. "People think..you know with the lifestyle..that you play quarterback..that you live like a certain lifestyle like a wild lifestyle. But, I just kind of keep to myself..I don't really talk a whole lot", said McCarron.
AJ is very serious about his relationship with his family. That and his Christian faith are memorialized on his chest. He's gotten a lot of criticism for this tattoo. "It's basically Jesus and then it says Bama boy at the top, my last name, my family crest, my mom, my stepdad, and then my three younger brothers", said McCarron.
AJ does not regret his tattoo. In fact he's adding to his body art. Pointing to his chest, McCarron said, "Like over here it's got the crystal football. It's gonna have number 10 through it, MVP 2011 champs". He even has a spot ready to be inked in honor of 3 year old Starla Chapman, a little girl with cancer who AJ visits often. He recently used his celebrity to raise money for her. Hundreds of fans lined up to donate cash in exchange for AJ's autograph.
"This is the academic honor roll that I've made 2 years in a row..I've gotta wait on my third one", McCarron said while giving a tour of his family's Bama room. At his dad's house in Mobile, you'll find an impressive display of items marking the milestones of AJ. Number 10 jerseys, keepsakes from his high school days, and gifts from fans fill the room. But his most treasured items are the helmet and cleats he wore during the national championship game.
Despite all his accomplishments, AJ considers himself to be a humble guy,. "Yes maam, definitely..I don't ever..my parents, they've done a great job of doing that, and they never let me get the big head. And if I do, they bring me right back down....and so..I'm a normal kid at the end of the day", said McCarron.
