"I grew up in Mobile, Alabama. Somebody's got to be from Mobile right? And Mobile sits at the confluence of five rivers forming this beautiful delta." Mike Degruy became famous for his work with Oscar-winning director James Cameron filming the the wreck of the Titanic. He was working on a new project with Cameron in Australia when the helicopter he was flying in crashed - killing Degruy and the pilot.
Cameron issued this statement -- quote "Mike and Andrew were like family to me. They were my deep-sea brothers, and both were true explorers. Degruy was one of the ocean's warriors." Degruy's mother said the pleasure Mike got from his work gives her comfort. "Just like he's being remembered. As Mike died doing what he wanted to do. It's too bad that it happened like it did." The family is asking contributions in Mike's honor be made to a middle school in Southern California and two enviornmental groups, including Mobile baykeeper. The executive director of Mobile Baykeeper, Casi Calloway, remembers Degruy's infectious laughter. "Every picture is mike on any web site laughing, enjoying, happy. That was exactly how I knew him. Who I always saw - even in the heart of the BP oil disaster which frankly is the last time I saw him, laughing and saying, 'it's gonna be okay. We're gonna make it and we're gonna tell the world how to do better.'"
