The first day of the Alabama legislative session generally moves very quickly. The House itself was only in session for about 25 minutes before adjourning. This is more of a day for people to get settled in and have a first reading of some of the bills that will be introduced this legislative session. Among the issues that are expected to come up is going to be a tweaking of the Alabama immigration law. The speaker of the House says he would like to see some changes while keeping the integrity of the law in tact.
“We have been working on this since last session,” says speaker of the House Mike Hubbard. “We have talked to a dozen groups and gotten their feedback about what works and what doesn't in the real world. I believe that we have come up with a package that we will be able to pass that will take care of some of the unintended consequences so to speak but at the same time will not back up at all on the original premise. That is to make certain people who are living and working here in Alabama are here legally. “
As for issues that remain relevant to the Gulf Coast, State Senator Ben Brooks says he hopes to see more traction on homeowner’s insurance reform. He says he hopes the issue will gain more support and they may pass something in 2012.
