The two women charged in the Summerdale animal cruelty case turned themselves in to the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette at 8:30 this morning.
Roberta and Sharon Dueitt, founders of Purple Hearted Puppies rescue shelter, have so far been charged with one felony count of animal cruelty. According to Summerdale Police Chief Eddie Ingram, the District Attorney will present the case to a grand jury and they could be indicted on 80-100 felony animal cruelty counts.
Yesterday, Summerdale police dug up the remains of many dogs and cats behind the animal rescue shelter. Summerdale Police Chief Eddie Ingram tells News 5 they believe the Dueitt's would try to sell dogs they rescued. Any dog they couldn't sell, they'd let starve to death.
News 5 was the only station in Summerdale when police served felony warrants at the Dueitt's home on Thursday, but the Dueitts were not home.
More than 200 starving dogs and cats were discovered on the property on last Thursday. At least 30 animals were found dead.
