As soon as the ambulances arrived so did police officers, family and friends. Then without notice what Mayor Sam Jones called a very sad day turned into heartbreak. "This is something you never want to do. You never want to do in my job." Mobile police office Steven Green died shortly after arriving at USA Medical Center. "This officer was very excited about being a police officer. It was something he wanted to do, something he enjoyed doing and people respected him for what he did because he was one of our best officers." A husband and father he had only been with the police force two years. Mayor Jones and Chief Michael T. Williams had given him his badge. "This is a tragedy and prayers go out to the family and our other brothers and sisters in law enforcement because they are hurting also," says Williams. Throughout the evening support for the fallen officer grew. "This is a sad day for law enforcement across the country and in the city of Mobile. We are family," said Williams. Officer Green's wife along with a large part of his family were at the hospital. His mother is on her way to Mobile from Huntsville.
