Good news for more than 200 animals left abandoned and starving last week in Summerdale and Robertsdale. The animals that survived are continuing to improve and offers of help keep pouring in. Remember this guy? "Look at him now. He is happy to be here at our Fairhope Cat Coalition site where he's being cared for along with many of his other friends." According to Glenda Turner with the Fairhope Cat Coalition most of them are doing just as well. "We do have ten that are still at local veterinarians who are more seriously ill than the ones in this room but we believe they will recover and find a good home." A far cry from where these cats were a week ago when authorities rescued more than 200 animals in Summerdale and Robertsdale from the home of Sharon and Roberta Dueitt. "It still just seems like it couldn't be true." Veterinarian Julie Cleverdon has twenty-six of the dogs at her clinic in Foley. "Every one of those dogs has just turned around to be the sweetest. Their the most affectionate dogs for having gone through something like that." Still skinny from weeks without food and water most are healthy and obviously happy for the care and constant attention they are now receiving. "Somebody must have spent some time with these dogs at one time," says Cleverdon. "I've never had a group, and I've had some rescues that were just instantly this sweet." Their road to a full recovery though, will be a long one according to Humane Society Executive Director Sonja Presley. "This is not going to be healthy animals today. It's going to take weeks maybe months." Donations in the form of supplies and cash have poured in from around the world. As far away as Canada and London to California, Maine and Connecticut. The Baldwin County Humane Society, or BARC, says their main needs now are kitty litter (Fresh Step Scoopable is preferred), cat food and money to cover growing medical costs. There are several benefits planned to raise money and supplies starting Wednesday night at "Live Bait" at the Wharf in Orange Beach. Cahall's Deli in Foley is also collecting money this week and giving a percentage of their sales to the cause. Thursday night in Mobile, the "Crooked Martini" is collecting pet supplies along with cash donations.
