35 Hispanic workers at Sirmon Farms have quit their jobs this month. Owner Joel Sirmon says his migrant workers are confused and afraid of the new immigration law and are moving to "safe haven" states like Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.
Some are returning home to Mexico.
Sirmon says he's scrambling to find workers to help harvest his sweet potato crop, but he says good help is hard to find.
Sirmon tells News 5 Hispanics work hard, show up on time, aren't afraid to get dirty and often times have a better work ethic than some American workers he's hired. He's worried he'll have a hard time replacing the migrant workers that have left.
The immigration law could impact consumers. Vegetable prices could rise at grocery stores and produce stands.
Critics have called Alabama's immigration law the toughest in the U-S. Farmers, already struggling because of the weak economy, agree.
