Alabama Supreme Court blocks gambling litigation

The Alabama Supreme Court blocked litigation by a former electronic bingo hall operator in Mobile County who sought a ruling on the legality of machines seized by the governor's gambling task force.

The task force raided Jesse Griffin's newly opened gambling hall in Chickasaw on Feb. 25, 2010, seized 25 machines and took them to a warehouse in Montgomery. Griffin went to Montgomery County Circuit Court seeking compensation for the machines and a ruling on their legality.

The Supreme Court ruled Friday that the Montgomery court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

The court's 8-0 ruling said the proper venue is Mobile County, where the task force has gone to court seeking forfeiture of the seized machines.
