As bullets and explosions struck around troops at the New Kabul Compound on the morning of September 13, a soldier from Daphne found himself in the middle of the hostile fire.
The firefight lasted 20 hours, according to Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Carroll of Daphne, who spoke to News Five by telephone on Friday morning. Sgt. Carroll and many of the soldiers serving with him did not sleep.
Sgt. Carroll says troops anticipated the attacks given the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 was just days earlier.
Sgt. Carroll and 13 other Alabama National Guardsmen were honored for their response to fighting. Sgt. Carroll, who was deployed to Afghanistan in January, was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal.
This is Sgt. Carroll’s second tour of duty. He previously served in Iraq.
