An Alabama death row inmate convicted of brutally beating and suffocating his infant son in February 2005 was executed tonight.
The lethal injection was administered to Christopher Johnson shortly before 6pm. The exact time of death was 6:25pm.
Christopher Johnson had refused to pursue any appeals in an attempt to stop the execution. The 38-year-old Johnson filed court papers in May saying he didn't want to go to court on his behalf.
Johnson was convicted of killing his 6-month-old son, Elias Ocean Johnson, at the family's home in Atmore in February 2005.
Johnson represented himself during part of his trial and testified that he hit and suffocated his son because he hated his wife and didn't want to be near her. The wife, Dana Johnson, now lives in Arizona and is not expected to attend the execution.
Johnson's Final statement was, "game over." He continue to mouth words as the microphone was moved away from his mouth. Johnson then appeared to make a symbol with his hands and his brother, who was present for the execution, made the same symbol and held his hands up to the glass window.
Johnson's brother spoke after the execution saying, "He (Christopher Johnson) done paid his price. He had been waiting for it for a long time."
