The new documentary "In the Path of the Storms" showcases the rich history of Bayou La Batre and Coden--from its early days as a seafood haven to its present day struggles to remain afloat.
“It's a way of life which in some ways is going to be difficult in the face of economic realities to be preserved and it would be ashamed if it were not,” says Director Mike Letcher. The film shows how the age-old seafood industry is threatened by imported shrimp and rising fuel costs.
The documentary was shot over the course of the last few years and shows how the area has tried to come back from devastating storms at the turn of the century and more recently with hurricane Katrina as well as the BP oil disaster. Organizers say more screenings are planned in the future and they hope to get the hour-long documentary on Alabama Public Television.
