Bayou La Batre Mayor Stan Wright insists he will not resign over federal allegations that he defrauded the U.S. government in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and intimidated a witness in the investigation.

“I’m not quitting,” Mayor Wright told reporters as he left the federal courthouse on Wednesday afternoon.

Wright and his daughter, Mary Cook, are accused of transferring land and money to hide a profit the mayor allegedly made on the sale of his property to the city of Bayou La Batre

The land was used to widen the entrance to a new subdivision in the city, and the transaction was part of FEMA grant to build houses for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The mayor presented U.S. Magistrate Judge William Cassady with a list of medications he says he is taking for anxiety, depression and sleeping problems.

Wright and Cook pleaded not guilty to the charges.
