Alabama Governor Robert Bentley shrugged off the Justice Department's request to block enforcement of the state's new immigration law. News 5 caught up with the governor in Spanish Fort Friday.
"We're not surprised, we knew they were going to appeal it," says Bentley.
Opponents say the immigration law unfairly targets legal citizens. Some educators believe the law could ultimately affect children whose parents aren't U-S citizens.
"I feel sorry for families living in fear and I don't want that," says Bentley. "As a human being, I care about those that are here, especially if they're American citizen children."
But Bentley says as the state's top elected official, it's his job to enforce the immigration law.
"It's my sworn duty as Chief Magistrate of Alabama, my sworn duty is to uphold the law of the state and uphold the law of this nation and I'm going to have to do that," says Bentley.
