Shortly after they opened in August of 2010 claims offices were hard to get into, not anymore.
"The representatives talked with me and said they were four or five folks coming in a day and they really couldn't justify keeping it open," says Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon. The Gulf Coast Claims Facility in Orange Beach will close its doors for good in less than two weeks. It's one of eight locations in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana shutting down. In a statement to News Five Kenneth Feinberg says "…the consolidation of these offices continues the effort of the GCCF to optimize and provide the most efficient way to assist claimants."
As of November 15th the only place you can have your claims questions answered in person will be at the Gulf Shores office.
The closing is adding fuel to the fire between Congressman Jo Bonner and the claims czar. In a statement to News Five Congressman Bonner says in part, "…this latest move by Mr. Feinberg to close the Mobile and Orange Beach GCCF offices will further limit the ability of claims filers to argue their cases face to face with GCCF personnel."
For folks still struggling to be made whole by the claims process Mayor Kennon says there is still help. "I don't want folks to think that just because they are moving from Orange Beach we quit fighting for those who deserve. But I do think its time for the majority of us to move on and that's one of those reminders of things that wasn't the good ole days."
After this latest wave of office closings there will be only 7 full time claims office open in the gulf states.
