Kevin Ware and his wife Tracey have lived in the small town of Elberta almost a decade. So when the only pharmacy and doctor's clinic in the small town unexpectedly closed on Monday, they noticed.
"I came in to transfer a prescription yesterday," said customer Kevin Ware, "A lady told me they had broken in, got the doctors' computers, pharmacy computers, all the medicine from doctors office samples."
Kevin was unable to pick up the prescriptions for himself and his wife that day.
"I was very anxious, panicky," said his wife Tracey Ware. "The medicine says do not abruptly quit taking."
When employees got to the office Monday morning, they found their medication samples gone, and called police. The Elberta Pharmacy next door had also been broken into. But nobody will say why the alarm didn't go off.
"They did have an alarm, but I'm not going to go into that part of the investigation," said Interim Police Chief Julie Joyner.
Pharmacist Tonja Lowery says burglars cut the power and phone lines, then broke in through the back door, stealing jewelry from their front counter. Police will not confirm if any prescriptions or patient information was stolen. Customer Kevin Ware is nervous about the possibility.
"I have refills in there so they know all my information, my prescription, my address," said Kevin Ware. "I'm afraid they're coming to my house.
Chief Joyner says both offices are still checking their shelves to figure out what was stolen. They currently have no suspects, and no motive.
"At this point it's under investigation," said Interim Chief Joyner. "Got some leads that we're working on, but no concrete leads at this point."
But their customers say there's only one reason why someone would break in. "There's no telling," said Tracey Ware. "People will do anything for any high these days."
Elberta's only pharmacy and family practice were closed all Monday, leaving Kevin and Tracey Ware without their medications. Elberta has six police officers on the payroll, but only one person on duty at a time. The police department is right across the street from the pharmacy and family clinic.
