There were seven traffic deaths in Alabama over the Memorial Day weekend, according to a news release by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
During the 78-hour Memorial Day holiday travel period from 6 p.m. Friday, May 27, through midnight Monday, May 30, state troopers investigated seven fatal crashes resulting in seven traffic deaths. Of the seven fatal crashes, alcohol was involved in at least five and seat belts were not used in five. Last year a total of nine traffic deaths occurred in Alabama during the Memorial Day travel period.
Troopers investigated 294 traffic crashes and issued 3403 citations for speeding, 1706 citations for seat belt violations, 89 child restraint violations and made 110 DUI arrests. Troopers also assisted 249 motorists with various needs.
