Mobile Mayor Sam Jones will meet this week with Carnival's chief executive to get answers about the cruise line's abrupt departure from the Port City.
Jones will travel to Miami on Friday where he will ask CEO Gerry Cahill about Carnival's decision not to renew its contract with the Alabama Cruise Terminal.
The cruise line announced plans earlier this month to move the cruise ship, Elation, from Mobile to New Orleans.
In a statement, Cahill said the cruise line tried to "drive higher demand and pricing" but passengers cruising out of Mobile refused to pay an "acceptable" price for the cruise. The executive also cited higher fuel costs as a reason to pull up anchor and leave Mobile.
"Some of the numbers they've quoted we can't verify locally, so we'd like for them to be more specific," said Mayor Jones regarding Friday's meeting.
Carnival's departure will leave Mobile with a $26 million debt on the cruise terminal. The cruise line was operating out of the terminal on a year to year contract.
