To help offset a 165 million dollar shortfall in the state's education budget, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley wants teachers to contribute an additional one to five percent of their salary to retirement and health insurance.
Teachers News 5 spoke to obviously don't like the idea. They say they haven't gotten a raise in three years, pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets and tell us health insurance costs went up last year.
Governor Bentley says if state employees and teachers contribute additional funds to retirement and health insurance, it would save the state 100 million dollars a year. Alabama spends about a billion dollars a year on retirement and pension costs.
