The Alabama Department of Transportation is seeking information that may help authorities identify who is responsible for a Monday hit-and-run accident that damaged a metal utility pole, knocking out primary traffic management and monitoring connections used for cameras and message boards on the Causeway.
A vehicle struck a metal utility pole on the U.S. Highway 90/98 westbound Causeway just east of the Mid-Bay crossing at approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, and left the scene.
The hit-and-run crash damaged the utility pole containing one of the main communication connections for traffic management and monitoring equipment on the Causeway. Damages may take months to repair, according to ALDOT division engineer Vince Calametti.
“Until repairs are made, ALDOT’s traffic management center in Mobile is without a communications link to the traffic monitoring cameras and message boards along the Causeway,” Calametti said. “We will work as quickly as possible to repair and restore feeds to two traffic cameras and two message boards affected by this incident.”
Repair costs are estimated at $25,000.
ALDOT officials are hopeful that someone traveling on the Causeway at the time of the crash may have witnessed something that could help authorities in their investigation.
