Police in Summerdale say Phillip and Nichole Guidry needed food to feed their hungry children, but instead of providing for their kids, they ended up in jail.

On Tuesday, investigators say the Guidry's, with their three children in tow, went to the Dollar General on Highway 59 and tried to steal food, medical supplies and toys for them. Both were charged with shoplifting.

"I felt bad for the children that were there. Mom and Dad stealing, putting them in a bad situation," says Cpl. Quentin Bettner with the Summerdale Police Dept. "If they needed toys, they could have come here and we would have given them toys and food. I would have found them something, put them in touch with a church or something."

The Alabama Department of Human Resources is also investigating. The children are currently staying with a family member, but police say the Guidry's could be in jail for quite some time because they both have extensive criminal records.
