Gas stations that sell alcohol dot highway 45 in Prichard--places where beers are sold one at a time-- managers worry if the city makes it harder to get an alcohol license it'll just be harder for everyone.
“If we don't have license, we can't do business,” says Manager of Highway 45 1st Stop Thuan Pham. Thuan's liquor license here is up for renewal next month and he hopes he can continue operating.
“I have no idea but I hope that we're approved because we've been in business here so long and we don't have any problem,” says Pham. Nobody wants to see more boarded up businesses in Prichard, but many of the people who work at service stations I spoke with say it's hard to stay in business without the money from alcohol sales
“The city of Prichard is going broke right now and they want to limit one thing that brings them revenue,” says Nick’s Citgo Cashier Jay Patel. “It's very important it's like liquor and cigarette licenses are what run most of the gas stations in this area.” The proposal grows out of a concern stores can attract crime. Despite signs the alcohol gives people a reason to hang around stores and that can lead to fights and other problems.
City Councilman Ossia Edwards has never voted in favor of an alcohol license but says she'd support a renewal or transfer of a license if the business meets certain criteria.
“That's community friendly, keeping it clean, no loitering or negative activities around their places,” says Edwards.
