The Cofield's home is still standing, but you can see damage all around the roof and inside as well. The fire started at about 12:30 Tuesday morning. Bennie Cofield's wife and sons made it out first while he grabbed a bowl of water and tried to save his home.
“I went in there and tried to put it out at the window, but the smoke overtook me so I just come on out,” says Bennie. He says the fire started in the rear of the home--it spread along the roof and took a lot of what was inside with it--leaving almost nothing to save. The family survived and the only casualty was their dog. While there I saw one of their friends drive up and hand him money, small example of the help this family is getting from friends and neighbors.
