The new Alabama ethics law makes it a crime for teaches to accept monetary Christmas gifts from students, including gift cards.
The law prohibits all of Alabama's 295-thousand elected officials and state employees- including teachers from accepting "substantial" or "significant" gifts.
Teachers can accept home-baked goodies like Christmas cookies and cakes...but cash, gift cards, holiday turkeys and hams are a no-no.
Violaters of the new ethics law could be charged with a misdemeanor- and face fines up to six-thousand dollars and jail time.
Governor Robert Bentley says he'll ask lawmakers to revise the law, allowing teachers to accept gifts, in the next legislative session.
