"Works" Bomb Explodes in Foley Mailbox

Works bomb in Foley

Foley Police say someone put a homemade bomb in mailbox on Orange Avenue.

Investigators say on December 1st, Foley Police responded to a residence on Orange Avenue.  The resident told them they found a plastic bottle that had exploded inside of his mailbox.  The bottle is believed to be a "works" bomb.
A "works" bomb is a number of common household items mixed together inside of a plastic bottle, like a soda bottle.

When the mixture is placed inside the bottle and the cap is tightened, the chemical reaction of the mixture inside the bottle generates gases that build upand causes the bottle to explode.  The chemical reaction also causes the mixtureto become boiling hot.  The explosion can produce enough force to cause serious harmto a person including burns and blindness.  When you are out and about in your yards, please be mindful of these devices.  Some are configured in a way that the chemicals wont mix until the bottle is disturbed.  Some explosions occur within 30 seconds of mixture. Some of the "works" bombs appear to be slightly swollen with a dark colored liquid.

If you suspect any bottle to be a work bomb, leave the immediate area and call 911.

There was no damage to the mailbox and there are no suspects at this time.   If you have any information on this incident, please contact the Foley Police Department at 251-943-4431.
